You probably have heard of public domain?

I mean, have you heard how you might use material that is in the public domain to make money?

I Tony Laidig the Public Domain Expert and I was really surprised by his email today! First, let me give you some background.

If you are new to internet marketing and making money online then public domain material is one of the easiest ways to get started…. in fact, one of my first products was from public domain material.

All I can do is relate my experiences.

I first ran into public domain materials …..maybe 8 or 10 years ago from a guy named David Valleries. I don’t even know if he’s teaching internet marketing anymore. In fact, I believe he got into trading and is currently teaching forex and day trading stuff.

I learned the basics from Dave and even purchased the rights to his complete public domain class…. very good stuff. I wanted others to learn how they could quickly use this material to start making money online.

I stumbled on a few guys selling and teaching public domain materials over the years…. none of it really anything new. You can do a search on the warrior forum and find some wso’s on plubic domain. You’ll learn something from these materials but it’s nothing earth shattering. Nonetheless, I recommend buying everything you can because …..well, just one idea might be the golden egg for you and you’ll never know where you’ll find it!

Then I ran into a fellow named Tony Laidig.

Tony didn’t proclaim himself as a public domain expert. In fact, I must have just found him as he was getting started online. He shared some of the most amazing strategies for using public domain materials. He shared resources… in fact he shared just about everything he knew ….at least I suspect. His material was valuable and reminded me of the old days of when being on someone’s list meant that you received instructional materials, tips and techniques…. not one pitch after another!

Well…. I think Tony probably willing shared his stuff for a good year or two and then some more established internet marketers must have gotten ahold of him and convinced him to stop sharing these things and start charging.

Needless to say, I was disappointed to receive emails from Tony saying … buy my new product….. only 20 available…. use this special link. Yes…Tony Laidig fell into the grievous and greedy pit of the online entrepreneur and making money online because his obvious passion.

Now….although I was disappointed to see this change in character, I can’t say I blame him. Everyone wants to make money online and if you have special knowledge and can capitalize on it…. more power to ya.

Unfortunately for me, my tolerance for internet marketing tactics has gone to zero and Tony started using these tactics with his products. You know what I mean…. last day for this, secret link, dimesales (I hate those), never to be sold again….and on and on.

Regardless of what I consider faux pas on his part…. I would still recommend you get on his list and I would recommend you buy his stuff if you want to learn Public Domain because I honestly this Tony Laidig is the best public domain guy online today.

I recommend his products….at least the ones I’ve purchased. I use affiliate links to make money from products I recommend because I know how good they are.

If you’ve followed any of my blog posts over the years, I really don’t rave about anyone …..with the exception of Jimmy D Brown or a couple of products every year. So… you should consider my support for Tony something you might want to take a look at.

Tony’s knowledge of photoshop and his use of public domain images is simply beyond amazing. He’s got a product called Photo Profit Secrets that is more of a course than a single ebook. I honestly haven’t seen it yet, but I have a couple of his other public domain image related products that are just outstanding.

In fact, I picked up one of his free ebooks on how to digitize images, change them with free photoshop type programs, where to get them turned into posts and make a profit with it….didn’t cost a penny.

Anyway….let me get to the main point of this post.

I’ve tried to establish that Tony Laidig is a public domain expert who has, in my optinion and his, strayed off his intended path of helping people while at the same time trying to make an income for himself.

Today I got any email from Tony that was an aplogy. I was extremely excited to see this change of heart and wanted to share it with anyone who gets a chance to read this post. Here’s the first paragraph of his email:

I want you to know that I appreciate you and the trust
you have put in me to provide quality products and training.
My desire is to provide you with the best content, products
and interaction possible, and so when I see areas that need
to change, I have no problem stepping up to address them.
And that’s why I owe you an apology. There are a lot of
different tactics used these days to motivate people to buy,
from fake screenshots and outright lying to more subtle
strategies, like scarcity and limited-time offers. While
I have never faked screenshots (never use them) or lied
to you, the scarcity approach has been bothering me a lot
lately. If you think about it, it’s stupid to say that
only XX copies of a digital product are available, or
that the first XX people get a special price. I refuse
to play that game any longer, and I’m sorry. My desire
is that your motivation for investing with me be on the
merit of the product, not stupid trickery.

I will proudly and confidently support you and your products and I wish you the best in your new direction.

Public Domain Magazines Uncover New Niche Markets

I was on a forum today and they were talking about various ways to find new niche markets. The original poster suggested using classified ads in newspapers. Pull out a paper and circle some of the different products or services being sold and start thinking outside the box. Gives you a few ideas for keywords to be used in some of the keyword tools. One guy was having a hard time coming up with keywords for Micro Niche Finder, a specialized keyword tool. Well….using classified ads would be perfect to dig up some new keywords.

Then someone mentioned magazines and how they could be used for the same thing. The so called guru’s have promoted magazines as a method to discover profitable niches for a long time and it works. I added my two cents about using magazines to uncover profitable niches below.

Magazines are helpful on several levels today, just browsing as you mentioned …..starts the creative juices flowing.

One thing to keep in mind, in today’s economy we see magazines getting thinner and thinner. Also, they tend to be more niche specific…..the broad cover everything type magazine is getting pretty thin! This means that anyone advertising a specific niche more than one or two issues in a row are making probably making some decent money. So…..you just found a good niche that is profitable

Another use for magazines:

Magazines that are in the Public Domain provide an excellent source for unique content on many different niches. I’m not much of a public domain expert, but there’s a guy that promotes using public domain content from magazines to develop different niches. Besides finding these mags at the library you can usually grab them on ebay for a couple of bucks.

You don’t have to worry about everybody and their brother jumping on this method because it involves a little work. You either have to scan and convert the scan to text…..or retype. Surprisingly I found these mags a good source of images that you can use for just about anything. Public Domain is a great way to think outside the box when it comes to discovering new niche markets!

Don’t forget to take your new keywords and plug them into your Micro Niche Finder keyword software. Of course you can use any keyword software you have or the free Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

Create Quality Site with Xsitepro and WordPress

If you are selling public domain images than you probably have at least one static webpage up and running to sell your products. Although this is a good strategy, it isn’t the best strategy. By adding a blog to your website you can gain a lot more exposure and website traffic due to the inner workings and dynamic nature of a wordpress blog. Below I describe a product that can help you sell more public domain images by incorporating a wordpress blog in your static website….

You might use Xsitepro, maybe dreamweaver or even wordpress.com….it doesn’t matter. There’s nothing like having your own blog….that is a wordpress hosted blog on your domain. If you are going to be selling public domain images online you need to stay aware of the hottest and most effective products available….consider my comments below about wordpress.

Selling Public Domain Images

Most government documents (including images) are in the public domain, that is, they are free to be used by the public. For example, here at PhotoSource International, we often get offers for “how-to” pamphlets or reports costing $5 to $25, on subjects ranging from gardening to aerospace; or posters announcing new tax or minimum wage announcements. It turns out these are government documents that have been re-packed by entrepreneurs and put out for sale to the public.

Stock photo agencies and independent photographers can do something similar.

In my book, “sellphotos.com,” on pages 208 & 209 I write about the photographer/entrepreneur, Tom Carroll, who ‘sold’ a “Public Domain” image to DRS Technologies for their annual report, for $875.
A distinction to note is that Tom Carroll did not “sell” the image; he found the image for the market and charged a “research fee’.

Why are documents and government-owned images free? When you work for the U.S. government, whether you are building a bridge, landscaping a new park, or taking a photograph, you are working for the people. So, the reasoning is — the people own the results. I’m surprised that more people have not come up with ways of selectively distributing the photos that are gathering dust in U.S. government archives. Tom Carroll’s approach is certainly valid. And we’ll no doubt see many mini-stock agencies begin to use the advantages of the Internet to distribute public domain images that are available to the people for the asking.

The subject s of these stock images range from aviation (historical to modern; U.S. to Russian); naval (most countries represented); agriculture (historical as well as new and innovative); photos from NASA, and even from the Central Intelligence Agency, which images, believe it or not, are also public domain and available (see page 212 in sellphotos.com).

SOME RESTRICTIONS

The federal government (U.S.) cannot own copyright, but even so, not all photographs on “.gov” and “.mil” sites are public domain. For example, a private donor or a foundation might donate a copyrighted image to a federal institution with the restriction that the copyright of the image will eventually revert to the estate of the original owner. Same is true for some photographers who make photos for the government on a “work-for-hire” basis, in which case the images may be copyrighted by the photographer and not the government. If you find an image on a U.S. government Internet site, it is most likely useable as a public domain photo, but you’d need to confirm that.

Keep in mind that our organization, PhotoSource International, focuses on editorial photography used in books and magazines. Commercial use of a public domain photo is another issue, and will have strong restrictions for its use. The challenge is (and this may be what’s been stopping you)

Below you’ll find a quick video on how to strip the images from a zip file or folder of a public domain book or magazine….anything that has separate image files. This is done by using Googles free image analyzer, sorter and editor called Picasa It’s a pretty cool tool and the technique shown in the video is new to me.

I guess you can learn something about public domain works and how to manipulate them every day

The author of the video, downloads a couple of books for project gutenberg and then extracts the images from the download….pretty cool way to scarf up those new images. I’m going to have to give it a try.
